Does Vinegar Kill Spiders?
The ultimate guide busting the myths on whether or not vinegar kills spiders.
We mention a lot of home – made pest killing and repelling methods on this website, don’t we? And one of the ones that seems to keep reoccurring, regardless of the pest we seem to be talking about is vinegar.
When it comes to spiders, this is debatable. Some will say yes – it absolutely works! Others will claim it did nothing more than make their home smell a bit funky. But does vinegar kill spiders? Read on to find out!
Below you’ll find the ultimate guide, busting the myths on whether or not vinegar will kill spiders.
Does Vinegar Really Kill Spiders?
Before we delve in and answer the killer question: does vinegar really kill spiders? We’re going to be taking a look at some of the science behind it, by inspecting the properties of vinegar.
Vinegar we use around the home tends to be slightly acidic, sitting at around five to eight percent in acidity levels. Because of these levels of acidity, it can prove as good germ, oil, and stain remover from surfaces around the house.
Because it contains acetic acid, it’s well believed that vinegar will kill spiders when they come into contact with it. However, this all depends on the acidic nature of the vinegar you use, meaning there isn’t really a straight – forward yes or no answer to the question, does vinegar kill spiders?
However, vinegar can be used as handy spider repellent if you want to deter them from coming into the home. This can even work on termites if you mix the vinegar with lemon juice!
How Would I Go About Using Vinegar to Kill Spiders?
Baring in mind that certain kinds of vinegar will kill spiders, you’ll probably be left wondering about the methodology behind using it to do so.
The first step in doing this, is to create a mixture with the vinegar using equal parts of water with white vinegar. Very simply, prepare the mixture, pour it into a spray bottle, and shake it well.
Then all you need to do is spray this mixture directly onto the spiders, and their webs. You can also use this in order to repel spiders from certain areas of your home, and to stop them coming back. The key areas to focus on would be dark corners, and entry points such as doors, windows and so on.
If you wanted to, you could also place small bowls of vinegar strategically around your home, in order to deter spiders. We’re not sure the smell would be all too pleasant, though!
Will Vinegar Alone Be Enough to Get Rid of Spiders?
Finally, we would like to make it clear that although vinegar could be useful in killing off and getting rid of a few spiders around the home, it won’t do enough to get rid of an entire infestation.
We can’t give a yes or no answer to whether it will definitely work, even to kill a few spiders, but it’s worth a try!
