Does Bleach Kill Spiders?
Our fully inclusive guide on whether or not bleach can really be used to kill spiders.
As the weather outside begins to turn and get that little bit colder, it’s likely that spiders are going to start to migrate towards the warmth. And where better to go than your cosy, centrally heated home?
With that in mind, you might have given some thought as how you’ll get rid of them this year. There is all sorts of household item talk when it comes to using what you already have in the home to kill insects, but there’s one in particular we’re going to be addressing today: does bleach kill spiders?
Read on for our fully inclusive guide on whether or not bleach really can be used in order to kill spiders.
Is Bleach Effective in the Killing of Spiders?
First things first, we’re going to be addressing whether or not bleach can really be effective in the killing of spiders.
Very simply, the answer is yes. Bleach can be very handy in the killing of spiders, and is usually successful in eradicating, not only arachnids, but other insects too.
The reason for this? The vast majority of insects use their exoskeletons to breathe over. Therefore pouring or spraying bleach onto them will cause them to die by suffocation.
The nature of the bleach being highly acidic will also throw the cell activity of the insect in question – in this case the spider – out of balance. In doing this, chlorine fumes will therefore poison the arachnid. Plus, the bleach will also kill the eggs of the spider, which will help to eradicate the infestation from your home entirely. A win – win!
How Should I Use Bleach to Get Rid of Spiders in my Home?
As with any form of insect eradication, there is a method to be followed in order to ensure it’s done correctly.
You’ll need the following components:
- Bleach.
- Water.
- A spray bottle.
- A broom or vacuum.
Start by diluting the bleach with water with an equal measure of both, then pour it into the spray bottle. Shake the mixture, and you’re ready to go!
You should then use the mixture to spray any spiders you see in your home, as well as any areas you have noticed being inhabited by spiders and their webs. It’s just as important to clean up after doing this as actually doing it, because it ensures you remove all of the dead spiders, and their eggs.
One piece of advice we would always give, is to remember you are handling bleach, despite the fact it is diluted. Therefore you should always actively avoid spraying the solution on surfaces which are likely to react to the bleach, and consequently fade. These areas include, but aren’t limited to sofas, fabrics, and carpets. You should also wear protective gloves, and be sure the bleach doesn’t come into contact with your skin or eyes.
Finally, be sure to spray from a safe distance. Just in case the spider is a biting one!
