DIY Mosquito Traps The Snare Drum Mosquito Trap:

Mosquitoes are drawn to carbon dioxide, which they mistake for human and other mammalian breath. They’ll zoom in on this simple snare, expecting to be sucking blood shortly, but they’ll instead meet their fate!

You’ll need the following items:

  • 1 cup boiling water
  • a quarter cup of sugar
  • yeast, 1 gram
  • a two-liter plastic container that is empty

Steps:

  1. Cut the bottle in half across the center.
  2. Heat the water, then add the sugar and stir to dissolve the granules.
  3. Pour the solution into the bottom half of the container once it has cooled, and then add the yeast to start the carbon dioxide reaction.
  4. To make a funnel, remove the cap, turn the top of the bottle upside down, and push it into the bottom half of the bottle. Then, using tape, join the two bottle halves.
  5. Secure a black sock, rag, or piece of paper around the exterior of the assemblage to improve the mosquito trap’s efficacy.

Place the snare above ground, away from gathering areas, in a shady area of the yard. The CO2 will attract mosquitos, causing them to enter through the funnel, where they will drown in the water. Fill the bottle with a new mix every two weeks or as needed.
